History of Brisbane’s cultural heart

South Bank has a full and inspiring history. Travel back to 1930 and you will see the South Bank dotted with dance halls, markets, theatres and wharves. However, this was not the initial plan. Early European settlers envisioned the area as Brisbane’s central business district. However, the realisation that it couldn’t occur was dramatic, with severe flooding washing away their plans. The CBD subsequently moved across the river to higher ground.

South Bank’s riverside industrial wharves were reinvigorated for the staging of World Expo 88 which attracted millions of people to the precinct. This inspired locals to pressure the Queensland Government to use the space as a public parkland, which was soon approved. Development happened gradually but South Bank is today deemed one of Australia’s favourite destinations, for locals and tourists alike.
