Banning all single-use plastic amenities

Single-use plastics harm the environment significantly as they take hundreds of years to decompose. This poses a threat to wildlife and ecosystems as they break down into microplastics, which can then be ingested by animals such as turtles and ultimately find their way into the food chain, including human consumption. This is why a major initiative that we have completed is to eliminate all single-use plastic amenities. It is safe to say that there is no shortage of amazing restaurants in Brisbane. Last year, Brisbane was able to welcome many new flavours to the table. The below restaurants are in no particular order, simply some of our favourites to date. Joy Restaurant – Founded by chefs Tim and Sarah Scott in 2019, this Fortitude Valley gem has quickly taken our hearts by storm. Shrouding the restaurant in mystery, you will not know what is on the menu until you arrive at Joy, but you can be sure that it will be delicious. Offering only about eight seats, pending the most current restrictions, you will definitely need to book your table quite a bit in advance. Elska – Elska is an old, Nordic translation for love, a love for food that you can taste with every meal at this intimate twelve-seater degustation restaurant. Highlighting local produce and expertly preparing it with Nordic culinary techniques, dining at Elska is a beautiful journey. Agnes – An ode to wood-fired cooking, Agnes has quickly gained a loyal following, combining the ancient skill of cooking over fire with contemporary hospitality. Ride at Kids’ Traffic Parks

If you’ve never heard of kid’s traffic parks before, let us tell you what you’re missing! All across Brisbane, at multiple parks and recreational centers, there are mini versions of streets complete with street signs, fuel stations and obstacles. Kids can take their scooters, bikes or toy bikes to these parks and have fun learning the rules of traffic in a playful way. Whether it is ‘fueling up your scooter’, racing with friends or simply spending some time outside, we love kid’s traffic parks, as they entertain your children while you can relax. . One of the best is located out in the bay area at Plantation Place Park , 5 Plantation Pl Wellington Point. Other parks include Kalinga Park at Clayfield, Melrose Park at Wooloowin or Grande Park at Springfield. Cost: Free

Explore & discover new worlds at Undersea Putt & Play

Imagine playing putt-putt mini golf, except everything makes you feel like you are underwater: the colours, the sounds, the atmosphere! This Brisbane mini golf course has been specifically designed for families and don’t be surprised if you’ll make friends with a shark, turtle, pirate or whale while playing! Featuring 18 holes of varying levels of difficulty, each hole presents a new ‘deep sea’ challenge. Best of all, the venue also boasts a ‘Glow in the Dark’ room, to which you can only get if you are brave enough to step through the jaws of a pre-historic ocean creature (psst: if you wear white, you will also glow in the dark). The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is the perfect space for kids to dream big. Located at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha,. kids can have a look through a telescope, see real fragments of asteroids and spacecraft models and watch informative short feature shows. Arguably, playful

learning is the most successful when trying to incite excitement in your kids about a new topic. Oh and you can’t miss the large cosmic skydome, the 12.5 meter-diameter projection dome when visiting the planetarium, it’s simply breathtaking! Cost: Adults: $10, Children: $6

Hang out with other kids and learn new skills!

Every Thursday (20th May-24th June), from 9am, Kids Collective is putting on free, fun activities for children aged up to 5 years right here at South Bank! Kids Collective was developed to entertain, educate and develop your children’s learning, from musical play to engaging craft workshops, you can find just about any cool kid’s activity at the Collective. Workshops are split into 30-45 minute sessions, taking place at 9am, 10am, 11am and 12pm. Upcoming workshops include: Interactive Play (24 June), Storytelling (1 July) and Bubs & Toddler Yoga (8 July). Cost: Free

Go for a dip at the South Bank Lagoon

Featuring pristine powder, white sandy beaches, sparkling blue water and its own rainforest, the Streets Beach, located in the South Bank Parklands (and only a 5 minute walk from the hotel), is the best beach in Brisbane! The lagoon is patrolled by lifeguards year-round and also has many water play activities for kids on offer. Cost: Free

Cuddle a Koala!

The world’s first and largest koala sanctuary is luckily located only about 30 minutes’ drive from sunny Brisbane, making it a perfect day trip for your little ones. At the sanctuary, you can meet more than 130 koalas, hand-feed kangaroos and birds and get up close and personal with more than 70 species of Australia’s unique native wildlife. Spark your kid’s quest for knowledge

Sparklab at the Queensland Museum is an interactive, science, technology, engineering and maths space, aimed at children aged 6-13 years. Putting the fun back into science, children can discover over 40 interactive exhibits across three fun-filled zones. At the lab, kids can, quite literally, see giant sparks of electricity generating in a glass globe, observe magnetic liquid and witness live scientific experiments. If these aren’t enough mind-blowing activities for you, you can also enter Science on a Sphere, from which you can watch clouds move across the world in real time, spot how a cyclone starts to form and circle the sun. Each session starts with safety training and you will get to practice a bunch before under supervision as well. No doubt, you will be comfortable with your grip, distance and axe in no time. You will also be able to compete in small games with your friends for the ultimate axe-glory. Lumber Punks features 19 lanes in total, enabling group bookings and individual fun alike. After your throwing session, make sure to check out their arcade, filled with plenty of fun pinball machines. Their motto is simple: Smash things…feel better. A tempting promise that for just $49, you can take out any frustration that may or may not have been building up inside. Choose from, among other things, old TVs, glassware, printers, and microwaves as your targets of choice, and crowbars, bats and sledgehammers as your weapons. Hyped as a way to have fun, de-stress or simply just to make a bad day better, the rage cage has been providing Brisbane-ites with an alternative to seeing a therapist since 2019. Of course, full safety gear is supplied so you are protected from any sharp flying objects making it a safe experience for all ages.

Abseiling Cliffs

The Kangaroo Point cliffs are an iconic sight in the heart of Brisbane. Reaching as high as 30 metres straight up, abseiling off the cliffs is not for the faint hearted and will surely challenge you if you are not comfortable with heights. There is a bonus though, at the top of the cliffs, you can take in one of the best views Brisbane has to offer. Watch City Cats glide by, the sun disappear behind the CBD’s high-rises and of course the beautiful Brisbane River. Rally driving in Willowbank

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to press the accelerator in your car and just keep gaining speed? Well, the Rally School at Willowbank, near Ipswich, offers the ultimate experience of driving in a real rally competition car on their racetrack. Offering three different racing combinations on their Motorsport precinct lets you experience the thrill of being a race car driver first hand. The surface of the dirt track is smooth, fast and ideal for hitting tremendous speeds. Many of the professionals at Rally School are ex-professional rally car drivers and will conduct a thorough induction and safety training with you. Additionally, you will have a professional sitting in the passenger seat while you are driving, keeping you safe at all times. You can also opt for a hot lap, where one of the professionals races around the track, with you in the passenger seat. From only $135, this great experience that can be enjoyed by the whole family, as it is just as fun to watch.

Escape Room

Not for the claustrophobic! Escape rooms are built on the premise of being locked into a room and having to solve a multitude of puzzles in 60 minutes to retrieve your ‘exit ticket’. There are multiple locations you can experience an Escape room adventure in Brisbane, one of the closest ones to our hotel being ‘Quest Room’ at 13 Cordelia Street, South Brisbane. All escape rooms also have a different theme, and are animated accordingly, with Quest offering: Sherlocked, Escape the Jigsaw and The Lost Tomb. The price varies depending on how many people are playing, and start from $35 per person.

Toowong Cemetery Ghost Tour

Walk among the dead at Brisbane’s largest cemetery in Toowong. Ghost Tours Australia run a two-hour historic ghost tour, telling the tales of dead governors, murderers, black widows and buried boxers. As part of the tour you will also receive a copy of the book: Ghosts of Toowong by Jack Sim. Additionally, part of your ticket price is donated to the Ghost Tours’ Heritage Fund. Brisbane’s best outdoor exercise spots

Did you know a workout is a guaranteed way to increase your endorphin levels? Not that you needed an excuse to soak up the beautiful Brisbane summer sun, but here are some of our favourite, easy ways to get outdoors and break a sweat in the River City!

Public fitness equipment

Lucky for Brisbanites and visitors alike, there is a multitude of publicly available, free fitness equipment in parks all over the city. While exercise equipment differs in every park, it almost always includes static equipment for chin-ups, sit-ups and step-ups as well as interactive and movable equipment for cardio and resistance training. Much of the equipment is similar to the machines you would find in a gym and there is instructions on most of the machines too, ensuring a safe and fun workout. The closest outdoor gym in South Bank is located directly on the Brisbane River, near the Riverside Drive Pontoon. It is located underneath a bridge, so shaded all day long, perfect for those sweaty summer workout sessions! Other locations near South Bank include Orleigh Park and on Kurilpa Street, both in West End. You can see them on the map HERE.

Running tracks

Whether you are an everyday runner, a once-in-a-while runner or more of a walk and run runner, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a route in our river city. Many routes hug the river, granting you stunning views and making any pain so much more bearable. One of our favourite tracks is the Brisbane Riverwalk, which takes you 1.5km from Brisbane’s iconic story bridge to Merthyr Road in New Farm, from which you can continue on to New Farm Park for a total of 3.2km. For a slightly longer run, why not start here in South Bank along The Arbour, across the Kurilpa Bridge, which won the 2010 Engineering Awards, continuing onto the Bicentennial Bikeway heading towards the Brisbane City Botanical Gardens. After doing a loop through the Botanical Gardens and admiring the floral beauty, head back to South Bank across the Goodwill Bridge. Make sure to stop for a coffee on top of the bridge at ‘Café on the Goodwill Bridge’, after all you’ve earned yourself a little reward with this 6km beauty of a run! Other beautiful spots to strap up your runners are the Roma Street Parklands, Mt Coot-tha Summit Track (steep and more of a trail-run across rocky terrain!) or heading towards the Kangaroo Point Cliffs from South Bank.

Stairways to heaven

Everybody can walk on flat ground right?! If you really want to break a sweat, try some of Brisbane’s best staircase fitness challenges. Arguably the most famous of which being the Kangaroo Point stairs. Starting at the bottom of the cliffs, there’s only 107 steps between you and an impressive view over the river and city, definitely worth the sweat. . As it is a fairly narrow staircase, you may find yourself sharing it with a few other people, but believe us, you will need those breaks! Another heart-pumping staircase challenge are the Wilson Outlook Reserve Stairs at Howard Smith Wharves. If you have ever taken the elevator down to Felons Brewing, you will know that the 120 stairs leading up or down the cliffs are anything but easy! Try them next time you are walking or running along the New Farm Riverwalk, they make for a great little detour with stunning views over the Story Bridge and Brisbane city. Alternatively, why not head out of the city for a little bit of peace and quiet. At Mount Coo-tha, the 900m long Kokoda trail, takes you uphill fast and sure makes for a pumpy workout.

Cycling tracks

Cycling tracks in Brisbane are about as common as cafes on every street corner. There is a LOT to choose from and many scenic routes taking you all around Brisbane’s most stunning pockets. If you don’t have a bike, don’t worry! CityCycle stations provide bikes for free for the first 30 minutes, then it’s a mere $2/hour and $5/ every thirty minutes after that. Riverlife also let you hire a mountain bike for $25/day. Staying in the city, the 36km long Brisbane River Loop leads along the Brisbane River, as the name suggests, and passes by Kangaroo Point, out to the University of Queensland in St. Lucia as well as along Howard Smith Wharves and New Farm Park. Definitely one of our all-time favourites is the Kedron Brook bikeway, an extremely quiet, green and scenic path taking cyclists out to Nundah and ultimately all the way to Sandgate, totaling an impressive 24kms. If you don’t mind going up a mountain, the Mount Coot-tha Loop is an incredibly beautiful loop, ultimately taking you to Brisbane’s most famous lookout spot. You can either choose to cycle up the 10km loop or head straight up the shorter, winding main road, which features a wide bike lane. A word of warning though: This route is STEEP!

Dancing

A fun way to get your body moving is dance! Friday nights are Salsa dancing nights at Reddacliffe Place which is located in between the Treasury Brisbane Casino and the Brisbane City Central Library. Strangers will soon become friends and don’t worry if you have never danced before, there are free dancing lessons from 8pm that will teach you the infamous Latin American dancing style. What are you waiting for? Break that sweat!

South Brisbane Laneways

Melbourne and Sydney are known for their street art, but did you know that Brisbane also has its fair share of amazing artworks? Blending in perfectly with the edgy surrounds, you can snap some shots when walking through South Brisbane’s infamous Fish Lane. ‘Adrift’ by Loretta Lizzio, ‘The Harvest’ by Mimi and ‘Message in a bottle and octopus’ by Fuzeillar are just some of the artworks you can explore. While you’re there, grab a wine from La Lune or a pizza from Julius Pizzeria, true Brisbane institutions. Continuing onto Boundary Street via Merivale Street, you can follow it all the way into Brisbane’s most trendy suburb, West End. The suburb’s laid-back flair also gave way too much of the street art you can admire on buildings and in between residential Queenslanders.

Mount Coot-tha & Botanical Gardens

Of course, Mount Coot-tha belongs on this list. What would Brisbane be without its popular No.1 lookout spot? Located just west of the city, make sure to head to the top for sunset, as you can watch the sun illuminating our river city as it disappears behind the skyscrapers. Another location in close vicinity to the Coot-tha lookout are the Mount Coo-tha Botanical Gardens. Many native and exotic plants call the gardens home and make for amazing photo backdrops. One that you can definitely not miss is the botanical garden’s tropical dome (cover photo). Its geodesic structure is insanely Instagram-worthy.

University of Queensland

Nestled in close proximity to the Brisbane River, the university’s St. Lucia campus boasts 114 hectares of beautiful sandstone buildings, contemporary architecture and landscaped gardens and lakes. Its great court is heritage listed for a reason, so hop on the next City Cat and fly down river to wander through this iconic campus.

Gallery of Modern Art

Regularly featuring some of the world’s most renowned artists, exhibitions at the Gallery of Modern Art are one not to be missed. Ai Weiwei’s giant chandelier is by far the most impressive piece of lighting one has ever seen and instantly boosts any Instagram account. The gallery’s most current exhibition, Mavis Ngallametta’s ‘Show me the way to go home’ offers lush backdrops of incredible indigenous art pieces, detailing nature’s many facets. Obviously, only take photos when allowed to do so.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Get up close and personal with Australia’s most famous inhabitants. Koalas, kangaroos, wallabies and many more residents await you at the sanctuary and cannot wait for you to feed & cuddle them! Plus, they’ve always got a smile ready when you pull out your camera.

Fairy light trees QUT or Captain Burke Park

Imagine a whole tree wrapped in nothing but fairy lights. Sounds like straight out of a fairy tale and too good to be true? Well, not in Brisbane! At the Queensland University of Technology’s city campus as well as at Captain Burke Park in Kangaroo point, you can shoot giant fig trees, magnificently illuminated against the night sky. You’re welcome.

St John’s Cathedral

When driving past St John’s Cathedral on Brisbane’s Ann Street, you may quickly notice this building is very different from the surrounding high rises to its left & right. Built from Brisbane tuff (it’s a type of rock, and it’s pretty tough too) and sandstone, the outside is almost as stunning as the church’s interior. Its gothic revival style boasts high, arched ceilings, which would feature oh-so perfectly on your feed.

Enoggera Reservoir

Who says you have to travel far to get a slice of nature’s goodness? The Enoggera Reservoir is comprised of stunning, lush, green forest and an ever-so-blue lake. This blue and green stage can only be enhanced by the blooming flower lilies, at special times of the year. Located a short 40-minute drive from the Brisbane CBD, the reservoir makes for the ultimate half-day big smoke getaway.

A local’s guide to South Bank

After living in Brisbane for almost a decade, I would love to share with you some tips and tricks I’ve discovered in my favourite part of the city, South Bank. I’ve got to warn you though, this day is packed full with things to do, so I would recommend starting your day early.

07.00am

Welcome to South Bank! Many would say South Bank is Brisbane’s heart & soul, filled with excitement around every corner and chock full of places that are only waiting to be discovered. No morning is complete without a good breakfast and lucky for you, there is an amazing full buffet breakfast option right here at the hotel. The full buffet breakfast at Novotel Brisbane South Bank impresses with ‘Eggs cooked your way’, fresh bircher muesli & fruits, an extensive hot breakfast section as well as barista made coffees to start your day in the best way possible. After breakfast, step outside into Brisbane’s semi tropical weather and make your way to the South Bank Parklands, bypassing the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. Take a moment though to admire the huge man-made waterfall running along the side of the complex.

Soon you will find yourself on Grey Street, South Bank’s main street. Grey Street comes alive at night with dozens of diverse restaurants luring you in to dine and discover cuisines from all over the world. When following straight ahead towards the Brisbane river you will also discover Little Stanley Street, which is just a little version of Grey Street. Here’s where your eyes will land on the beautiful Bougainvillea Archways ahead signalling that you are close to reaching your destination. The Archway is a vertical garden adorned with beautiful magenta Bougainvillea blooming almost all year and provides a pedestrian way, running the entire length of the South Bank Parklands. Once you have reached the iconic Wheel of Brisbane, hop into one of their 42 gondolas and see Brisbane from 60 metres above the river below. Its magnificent views will give you a great understanding of the river city.

Following your adventure in the air, you can either choose to explore the exhibitions and shows at the Queensland Museum or at the Gallery of Modern Art. While you are in Brisbane’s cultural forecourt, and after you’ve snapped a photo with the iconic ‘Brisbane’ sign, take the time to discover if the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is playing any shows that you would enjoy watching in the evening.

11.30am

South Bank is also a great vantage point to admire our city’s skyline from. The many skyscrapers provide a great photo backdrop in the evening, a great time to capture all of your favourite memories. Now it’s time to enjoy a coffee at one of Brisbane’s most unique cafes: The Goodwill Bridge Café. Located right in the center of the Goodwill Bridge, this “Local’s Favourite” offers sparkling views of the Brisbane River in every direction. Alternatively, check out Brisbane’s Street’s Beach, a glistening blue oasis in the middle of the city. Complete with real white sand, palm trees and plenty of sunshine you are invited to relax, read a good book and enjoy the cool of the water. If you’ve planned it well, grab a bite to eat at the South Bank Collective Markets. These markets are on every Friday – Sunday and are a beautiful opportunity to organise any gifts for loved ones. Find locally made artwork, clothing and all-round artisanship as well as delicious food stalls and live music.

After spending all morning beside the Brisbane River, it is now time to take a ride on a City Hopper. This free, small ferry offers great views of the Brisbane River and takes you from New Farm Park to the Brisbane CBD and back, as it is running in a constant loop. Feel the wind in your hair and sit back while enjoying a ride past the City Botanical Gardens, the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and underneath Brisbane’s Story Bridge.

Once you are back in South Bank, take the time to unwind from your very eventful day with a pre-dinner drink somewhere. Spice Central Kitchen & Bar at the Novotel Brisbane South Bank offers an exciting cocktail menu, many are infused with spices from all around the world and the open plan ambiance really makes the perfect destination to get ready for the night ahead.

It is up to you if you would like to stay at Spice Central and keep exploring the world’s spice market’s over a delicious dinner or visit some of the nearby West End restaurants like Nostimo at the Greek Club, just across the street from Musgrave Park, which offers authentic Greek food and a Mediterranean atmosphere. You have to try their Pork Belly Baklava and their Saganakis.

One of my favourite things to do after dinner in South Bank is wandering through its many laneways and admiring the street art on every corner, like in Fish Lane. If you do feel like creating art yourself, you will most likely find yourself in Cork & Chroma’s South Bank studio. Paint while sipping wine and re-discover your inner Picasso. Classes are on every weekday at 7pm, with earlier afternoon classes on the weekends.

Whether you want to learn a new skill or simply watch the professionals put their best foot forward, Salsa nights at the Reddacliffe Place are guaranteed to get your weekend off to a good start.

Gardening

A team at the Georgetown University Medical Centre recently found that skin contact with fresh soil boosts serotonin levels in the body and therefore, makes us happy! Luckily, you can learn the art of gardening (and not killing all your plants, let’s face it) at multiple community hubs around Brisbane – South Bank’s Epicurious Gardens and the West End Community Garden. Discover what makes good soil, how to let your plants thrive and fascinating and helpful information about Australian native flora & fauna. Participation is free and you can also partake in harvests, which let you enjoy the fruits of your labour (literally).

Feeding wild dolphins

Take a visit to Moreton Island and Tangalooma to experience a breathtaking encounter with a pod of wild dolphins. The bottlenose dolphins are playful and visit the shores of the island each night just after sunset. The dolphins are fed only 10% of their daily food intake, so they do not lose their natural hunting instincts. Learn about dolphins and the bay they call home and Moreton Island from Eco Rangers and get closer to nature like you have ever been before! Rise and shine! Waking up with the sun, or in this case, before, has never been more worth it. Mount Coot –tha, Brisbane’s iconic lookout spot is 15 minutes’ drive west from the hotel. There, you can watch the sunrise over the ocean and slowly light up Brisbane. Take a picnic blanket, bring some breakfast & coffee and admire the sunrise in all its glory from Mount Coot -tha’s grassy lookout area. You can even get a closer look through one of the telescopes. Getting there is very easy, with the bus 471 taking you all the way to the top. Alternatively, you can opt to drive or bicycle there.

Brisbane’s café and coffee culture

There is nothing quite like walking into a bustling café, hearing the coffee machines hiss while wrapping your hands around a freshly made ‘flat white’. In case you are wondering what a ‘flat white’ is, there is really only one explanation: Australia’s coffee and café culture is unlike any other, with many Australian cities taking extreme pride in the art of making coffee. You will find many cafes dotted all around Brisbane, but the majority is centred in and around South Bank, West End and the Brisbane CBD. West End is only a short walk away from South Bank and our favourite places are the newly developed West Village and the Boundary Street Markets.

Are you ready to break a sweat? If you wander around Brisbane in the mornings, you will find plenty of people exercising. And what better way to make use of the milder mornings! South Bank is just about the best spot to exercise too, with its South Bank Parklands and stunning views of the Bougainvillea Archway and the Brisbane river. Getting up early will also help beat the crowds at the South Bank lagoon, which is a popular attraction during the day for locals and tourists alike. Australia’s only man-made, inner city lagoon boasts a sparkling blue water pool and a white sandy beach to make your mornings the highlight of your day.

While you are there, use the early morning to your advantage and snap a photo of the popular ‘Brisbane’ sign just outside of the Queensland Performing Arts Center without having to share the glory with anyone.
